Health officials reported 14 new cases of COVID-19 on Hawaii Island on Sunday, bringing the island’s total case count to 1,052.
Nearly 41% of the cases (430) on Hawaii Island since Feb. 28 have been reported in the Hilo ZIP code area, according to data supplied by the Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center. The 96740 ZIP code area, which comprises Kailua-Kona and Kalaoa, has recorded 279 cases. The remaining 23% of the cases are spread around the island with areas like Pahoa reporting 67 cases and Waikoloa 16 cases.
The new Hawaii Island cases were among 83 positive results announced by the Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center bringing the statewide tally to 14,031. Oahu reported 68 new cases while Kauai reported one new case.
As of noon Sunday, 2,987 of those known cases were considered active, including 289 cases on Hawaii Island. An active case is defined as an individual who has tested positive for the coronavirus and is being monitored by the Department of Health.
Free drive-through COVID-19 testing will be offered from 8 a.m. to noon today at Keauhou Shopping Center in North Kona, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.
Statewide, 1,005 COVID-19 patients have required hospitalization, including 55 on Hawaii Island, according to the center’s noon update. According to Hawaii County Civil Defense, 10 were hospitalized on Sunday.
The state reported one new coronavirus-related death on Sunday among an Oahu resident.
Of the 187 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported to date among Hawaii residents to date, 150 were on Oahu, 18 were on Maui, 18 were on Hawaii Island, and one was a Kauai resident receiving treatment in Arizona at the time he died.
The state has yet to confirm the last 21 coronavirus-related deaths reported Hawaii Island. Twenty-seven of the deaths were among residents of the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo and another seven died at Hilo Medical Center, four at Life Care Center of Hilo and two at Kona Community Hospital.
