‘Discover Palamanui’ series continues today

Hawaii Community College — Palamanui is offering two online workshop during which students can learn about the Hawaii Life Styles program. The workshops are from noon to 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 6 p.m. today.

The workshops are part of the online “Discover Palamanui” workshop series to help students learn about academic offerings and how to enroll. For more information, including a link to attend the workshops, visit www.hawaii.hawaii.edu/discoverpalamanui.

Hawaii Community College — Palamanui is the Kona-based campus of Hawaii Community College, which is fully accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges. Students can earn associate degrees and certificates that prepare them to enter the workforce right after graduation or seamlessly transfer to University of Hawaii four-year campuses to earn bachelor’s degrees.

The campus also is home to the University Center, West Hawaii, which provides local support for students who enroll in online and hybrid bachelor’s and graduate degree programs at University of Hawaii campuses.

Free COVID-19 testing today in North Kona, Hilo

Free drive-through COVID-19 testing will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon today at Keauhou Shopping Center in North Kona, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense. Testing will also be offered from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Hilo Civic Auditorium in Hilo.

No insurance is necessary to be tested, but those seeking testing should bring their insurance card if they have one. There is no co-pay for individuals being tested for the novel coronavirus.

Zonta Club of Hilo awards over $6K in microgrants

The Zona Club of Hilo recently presented over $6,000 in five microgrants for “Pay It Forward” 2020. This award program supports women entrepreneurs who are starting a new business or working to expand an existing business.

Repeat grant recipients were Springer Kaye of Kaye Family Farms and Kristina Henricks of Good Karma Spay and Neuter Clinic. Both women received initial grants in 2019 and were awarded second grants this year based on reports of successful use of first year funding.

Receiving new grants were Aesha Shapiro, founder of Ladies Artisan Market; Mattie Mae Larson, founder of Upcycle Hawaii; and Sara Krosch, founder of Big Island Active.

“We are excited that Zonta was able to assist female business owners keep their ventures on track, especially in tough 2020,“ said Elyse Robinson, Club President. “We wish we could have helped all of this year’s applicants.”

The Zonta Club of Hilo’s “Pay It Forward” program opened the grant application process this summer for women-owned businesses on Hawaii Island, and received a record number of high-quality applications. Plans for a program in 2021 are still under development.

Microgrants are funded through the charitable arm of the club, Zonta Club of Hilo Foundation, donations to which are tax-deductible.

Alzheimer’s Foundation seeks participants for ‘Light the World in Teal’

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) will “Light the World in Teal” on Nov. 5 to raise Alzheimer’s awareness as part of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Teal is AFA’s Alzheimer’s Awareness Color.

“Every person and place that participates in this global initiative is making a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease- and the more that join, the more awareness we will raise about Alzheimer’s,” said Charles J. Fuschillo Jr., AFA’s president and CEO. “We invite everyone to ‘go teal’ on November 5th to show their support for the millions of people living with Alzheimer’s.”

People and places around the globe are invited to take part in the annual awareness initiative and can learn more by visiting www.lighttheworldinteal.com.

More than 250 landmarks in 44 American states and nine other countries have already signed up to “go teal” on Nov. 5. The only Hawaii location current signed up is Aloha Tower in Honolulu.

Individuals can also participate in raising Alzheimer’s awareness by “going teal” on Nov. 5 by wearing teal, posting photos on their social media platforms using the hashtag #AFALightTheWorldInTeal or by turning their Facebook cover profile/cover photo teal.
