Five new Hawaii Island and 40 Oahu cases were among 62 positive results announced by the Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center as of noon Wednesday, bringing the statewide tally to 14,834 since Feb. 28. Of the remaining cases, two were on Maui and seven were on Lanai and one on Kauai. The cumulative total now stands at 94 confirmed cases on the island of Lanai. One previous case was removed due to updated laboratory information.
As of noon Tuesday, 3,229 of the 14,834 known cases were considered active, including 373 cases on Hawaii Island. An active case is defined as an individual who has tested positive for the coronavirus and is being monitored by the Department of Health.
Statewide, 1,081 COVID-19 patients have required hospitalization, including 64 on Hawaii Island, according to the center’s noon update.
Of the 213 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported to date among Hawaii residents, 166 were on Oahu, 16 were on Maui, 30 were on Hawaii Island and one was a Kauai resident receiving treatment in Arizona at the time he died.
As of Wednesday, Kona Community Hospital reported 5 total COVID-positive patients hospitalized,1 in ICU; 4 in Med Surg acute care unit and one patient on a ventilator with a cumulative total of 4 deaths having occurred in the hospital.
As a result of updated information, two previously reported deaths were determined to not be related to COVID-19 and were removed from the counts, one from Lanai, and one from Maui.
The state has yet to confirm 10 of the 40 coronavirus-related deaths reported on Hawaii Island. Twenty-seven of the deaths were among residents of the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo and another seven died at Hilo Medical Center, four at Life Care Center of Hilo and two at Kona Community Hospital.
