State health officials on Monday reported 78 new COVID-19 cases in the state, including four on Hawaii Island.
With the new cases, the state has now recorded 15,231 COVID-19 cases since Feb. 28, including 1,004 cases on Hawaii Island.
As of noon Monday, 3,144 of the known cases were considered active, including 353 cases on Hawaii Island. An active case is defined as an individual who has tested positive for the coronavirus and is being monitored by the Department of Health.
Statewide, 58 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized Monday, including 10 on Hawaii Island.
Kona Community Hospital reported during the afternoon it was treating seven COVID-positive patients, with one person requiring a ventilator. One patients was in ICU, five were in the Med Surg acute care unit and one in the OB, or obstetrical, unit.
No new coronavirus-related deaths were reported in the state on Monday. Of the 219 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported to date, 170 were on Oahu, 17 were on Maui, one on Lanai, 31 were on Hawaii Island and one was a Kauai resident receiving treatment in Arizona at the time he died.
The state has yet to confirm nine of the 40 coronavirus-related deaths reported on Hawaii Island. Twenty-seven of the deaths were among residents of the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo and four were at Kona Community Hospital.
Meanwhile Monday, the state Department of Public Safety said the total number of Hawaii inmates with active positive COVID-19 cases in medical isolation at Saguaro Correctional Center was 378. Six inmates were hospitalized. There are currently 1,081 Hawaii inmates housed at Saguaro.
“The Department of Public Safety is in constant communication with the Saguaro facility administration. They have assured us they immediately enacted the facility’s isolation and quarantine protocol upon receiving the test results,” said Fred Hyun, the department’s acting director. “Saguaro does not have an overcrowding issue and, therefore, can provide adequate space for isolation and quarantine. All positive offenders have been medically isolated, and Saguaro staff will continue to monitor the negative inmates for any symptoms.”
