Kona hospital reports fifth COVID-19 death

Hawaii Island reported eight new cases of COVID-19 and a new death on Monday.

The new Hawaii Island cases were among 95 new cases reported across the state by the Department of Health bringing the total case tally to 16,613. Oahu reported 76 new cases while Maui reported seven and Kauai two. Two residents also tested positive for the virus while outside the state.

Statewide, 63 people were hospitalized Sunday, including 10 on Hawaii Island.

Kona Community Hospital meanwhile Monday reported it had four patients hospitalized at its facility with three of those patients in the med-surg acute care unit and one in the intensive care unit. Two people required a ventilator.

The hospital also reported a patient had died Sunday, but declined to provide additional information citing patient privacy.

No coronavirus-related deaths were reported or confirmed Monday by the state. Of the 222 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported by the state to date, 173 were on Oahu, 17 were on Maui, one on Lanai, 31 were on Hawaii Island and one was a Kauai resident receiving treatment in Arizona at the time he died.

Including the death Sunday at Kona Community Hospital, Hawaii County Civil Defense has now reported a total of 49 coronavirus-related fatalities in Hawaii Island. The state has yet to confirm 18 of the deaths reported to date on Hawaii Island. Twenty-seven of the deaths were among residents of the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo and five were at Kona Community Hospital.
