Hawaii County Civil Defense said Monday that Hawaii Island, like a majority of the mainland, is seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases. Locally, cases have been spread within the community spread cases.

“Recent tests on Hawaii Island clearly show that the Coronavirus spread is due to close gatherings especially of young people and of families. Tests on Hawaii Island in the past week show that of the 33 who were tested positive, 14 were below the age of 25 and of this 4 below the age of 10. This cluster of young people has been identified in the Hilo District,” the agency said Monday afternoon.

No coronavirus-related deaths were reported or confirmed Monday by the state. Of the 233 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported by the state to date, 182 were on Oahu, 17 were on Maui, one on Lanai, 32 were on Hawaii Island and one was a Kauai resident receiving treatment in Arizona at the time he died.

Hawaii County Civil Defense has reported a total of 49 coronavirus-related fatalities on Hawaii Island. The state has yet to confirm 17 of the deaths reported to date on Hawaii Island and has not responded to repeated requests for information on pending cases.

Twenty-seven of the deaths were among residents of the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo and five were at Kona Community Hospital.
