DWS extends appointment only in-person services

The Hawaii County Department of Water Supply will continue offering in-person services by appointment through the end of the year to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Customers and members of the public may schedule an appointment to start a new water service, obtain help with an existing water account, or receive other in-person assistance during this time.

In-person payment collections and unscheduled in-person services remain suspended through December. To maintain safety, customers wanting to pay their water bill are asked to do so remotely using the no-fee payment options, while walk-in visitors lacking an appointment will be asked to schedule one for assistance.

To make an appointment, call (808) 322-0600 in Kona, (808) 887-3030 in Waimea, or (808) 961-8060 or (808) 961-8070 in Hilo.

The DWS is continuing to accept only telephone, online, auto-payment, mail, or non-cash payments left in a secured DWS payment drop box. To pay a water bill online, please visit www.hawaiidws.org, click either the “Pay Your Bill Online” or “Pay Online” tab and follow the self-service portal. Customers wishing to pay by telephone should call toll-free (844) 216-1994 anytime.

KHS seeks support to create research station

For this year’s #GivingTuesday campaign set for Dec. 1, Kona Historical Society hopes to raise $2,000 in 24 hours to create a small research station for public use inside the society’s Jean Greenwell Library &Archive. Donations can be made online at https://www.mygiving.net/campaign/KHSgiving2020 and contributions of all sizes make a difference.

This funding will be used for a computer, height adjustable table, ergonomic chair, software, training, and protective and sanitizing equipment to enable the community and visiting researchers to use the resources Kona Historical Society holds. The society’s archives hold a variety of collections: historical photographs, manuscripts, family records, oral histories, maps, tax records and more. All these materials are collected and preserved to help illustrate the history of Kona through its agriculture, ranching, geography, cultures, community members, small businesses and civic organizations.

With this new area, Kona Historical Society will be better equipped to welcome visitors and researchers to explore Kona’s history and culture. The addition of a research station will also allow Collections Manager Julie Kamiyama to continue cataloguing and digitizing the society’s unique and ever-expanding collections.

The Kona Historical Society is a community-based, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and Smithsonian Affiliate that has spent the past four decades collecting, preserving and sharing the history of the Kona districts and their rich cultural heritage within Hawaii.

For more information, call the Kona Historical Society at (808) 323-3222 or visit www.konahistorical.org.
