Sue Daimaru

Sue Nakamura Daimaru, 98, of Hilo, died Nov. 29, 2020 at Legacy Hilo Rehabilitation &Nursing Center. Born June 10, 1922, in Paauilo, she was a homemaker and member of Taishoji Soto Mission and Fujinkai, Piihonua Community Association and Pomaikai Senior Center.

Private services at a later date. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

She is survived by son, Roy (LaVerne) Daimaru of Hilo; daughter, Aileen (Steven) Kisaba of Mililani, Oahu; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Mitsuo Miyatake

Mitsuo “Mits” Miyatake, 89, of Pahoa, died Dec. 5, 2020, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born March 11, 1931, in Pahoa, he was a retired counselor and registrar for Pahoa High and Intermediate School, U.S. Army Korean War veteran and member of Puna Hongwanji Mission, Kyu Pahoa Kumiai and Pahoa Nikkei Jin Kai.

He is survived by wife, Tokimi Miyatake of Pahoa; sons, K. Mitchell Miyatake of Pahoa, K. Mason Miyatake of Hilo; brother, Eddie (Nancy) Miyatake of Waipahu, Oahu; sister, Frances Hayashi of Hilo; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Shon Bowden III

Shon C. Bowden III, 74 of Hilo, died on Oct. 22, 2020, at his residence. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired farmer, commercial fisherman, restaurateur, U.S. Army Vietnam veteran helicopter pilot and merchant seaman.

A drive-through visitation will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 3, 2021, at 1715 Railroad Ave. in Hilo.

He is survived by spouse, Angeline (Ramos) Bowden; son, Shon (Mary Jane) Bowden IV; daughter, Caroline (Auredith) Tumpap; brothers, Matthew Bowden and Timothy Bowden; sisters, Claralyn Nalani Bernardo, Rebecca Pascual, Leilani Kekaualua and Kanani Harris; and numerous grandchildren, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Daren Stanley

Daren Puna Stanley, 47, of Keaau, died Oct. 13, 2020, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Kahuku, he was a special projects supervisor for Hawaii Care and Cleaning, operating from the Hilton Waikoloa Village resort.

Robert Eaton III

Robert Byers Eaton III, 75, of Hilo, died on Nov. 21, 2020, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Auburn, Washington, he was a self-employed building and maintaining computer rooms and their environment.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 26 via Zoom.

He is survived by his spouse, Linda Eaton of Hilo; daughters, Lynn Rachelle (Ramon) Labayog; Dawn Michelle Baker; Allisha Louise (Rich) Marlatt; Annitra Jennese Eaton; sister, Joan (Tom) Throop; eleven grandchildren; and numerous cousins.

Kikuo Tobara

Kikuo Tobara, 83, of Kailua-Kona, died Dec. 8, 2020, at Life Care Center of Kona. Born Oct. 10, 1937, in Hakalau, he was the retired owner of Paul’s Upholstery.

He is survived by wife, Jean Tobara of Mililani, Oahu; daughter, Xandria Tobara of Kealakekua and Shayne (Rick Spofford) Tobara of Mililani, Oahu; sons, Rance Tobara of Kailua-Kona and Shawn Tobara of Mililani, Oahu; brother, Ernest (Joyce) Tobara; sisters, Thelma Ho and Sherry (Richard) Nushida, all of Honolulu; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lorimae Thompson

Lorimae August Thompson, 63 of Hilo, died Nov. 28, 2020, at her residence. Born in Honolulu, she was a retired sales clerk, cashier, market sales, hostess at Imiloa Astronomy Center, Aloha Petroleum, and a founder of the COPD support group.

She is survived by husband, David Thompson; mother, Mercy Oliveira; step-father James Oliveira; sons, Mark Vellalos and David (Kawika) Thompson; daughters, Melissa Vellalos and Mapuana Vellalos Solomon; brothers, Troy Oliveira, and Kahoa (K.J.) Raymond Paglinawan

Raymond Melicio Paglinawan, 56, of Captain Cook, died Dec. 9, 2020, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Nov. 16, 1964, in Hilo, he was a construction laborer, grounds maintenance man at the Kukio Golf Course and a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Mary Sai

Mary Nanea Reeves Sai, 80, of Glenwood, died Dec. 4, 2020, at her residence. Born in Kuliouou Valley, she was an Oahu district manager for Alu Like, Inc., member of the Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club and Choral group and Hui Aloha Aina o Ka Lei Maile Alii.

Iwao Yamasaki

Iwao Yamasaki, 94, of Hilo, died Dec. 13, 2020, at his residence. Born in Kurtistown, he was a retired employee of HELCO and a U.S. Army veteran.

Cynthia Shizue Oi, 73, of Volcano, died Dec. 7, 2020, at her residence. Born in Honolulu, she was the assistant managing editor for news, acting city editor, news editor, features editor and copy editor for the former Honolulu Star-Bulletin and wrote the column “Under the Sun” for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

She is survived by companion Alan Matsuoka of Volcano; brothers, Thomas Oi of Kauai, James (Sandy) Oi of Hawaii Island, and Edward (Dale) Oi of Oahu; and sister, Lydia (Richard) Wojtowicz of Pennsylvania.

Alexander Kauahipaula Jr.

Alexander “Uncle Ball” Ikukalaihiku Kauahipaula Jr., 75, of Kailua-Kona, died Dec. 11, 2020, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Sept. 25, 1945 in Kaneohe, Oahu, he was a retired laborer and meat processor for United Meat Company in Honolulu.

Darrell Okano

Darrell B. Okano, 62, of Holualoa, died Nov. 25, 2020, at his residence. Born in May 15, 1958, in North Kona, he was a Kona coffee and Macadamia Nut manager of a large family farm.

Angelina Alcosiba

Angelina “Angie” “Nana” Akana Alcosiba, 73, of Mountain View and Las Vegas, died Nov. 16, 2020, at her residence in Las Vegas. Born in Kona, she was a retired office manager at East Hawaii Cultural Center and attended church at Encourage Fellowship in Keaau.

Phillip Saetveit

Phillip Martin Saetveit, 73, of Kurtistown died Dec. 2, 2020, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Rochester, New York, he was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Melvin “Mel” Wayne Moniz Sr., 74, of Hilo,, died Dec. 14, 2020, at his residence. Born in Hilo, he was a superintendent for Meadow Gold Dairies and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

James Kimo Keiter-Charles, 38, of Honokaa, died Nov. 24, 2020, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born February 22, 1982, in Honolulu, he was a CPS investigator for the State of Hawaii, a former basketball player for the UH-Hilo Vulcans and an avid ocean sportsman.
