Hawaii Island police arrest two dozen for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested two dozen motorists for suspected drunken driving Dec. 14 and Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested 12 drivers while South Hilo and Puna officers arrested four drivers in each district, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala arrested three motorists while officers in North Kohala arrested one driver.

So far this year, there have been 977 DUI arrests compared with 1,060 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 754 major accidents so far this year compared with 958 during the same period last year.

Fifteen fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways, police said. By this time in 2019, 25 people had perished.
