Now under new ownership, Fujihara Store continues to give back. For 105 years, the store with the unmistakable yellow exterior has been a staple of the South Kona community; when Celeste Hua and Henry Cho bought the spot from Dusty Boyd early in May, they made sure to continue that tradition of giving back.
Over Thanksgiving, Hua and Cho distributed around 200 meals to the community. For Christmas Eve, they stepped up once again, preparing traditional Kalua pig, fish and more to feed hundreds more.
“As a community, it’s a really nice thing,” said Hua. “We’re so blessed that the opportunity even came up. I know [Boyd] didn’t want someone the mainland or another country to take it over and change it up…. It’s in our community.”
