A hiker who apparently sprained both knees after a fall near the 13,000-foot elevation of Maunakea was rescued Monday evening.
Rescue personnel from Pohakuloa Training Area were dispatched at about 2:35 p.m. to the summit of Maunakea, where a female hiker was located on a path about 2 miles above Hale Pohaku and a mile below Lake Waiau, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.
The woman had apparently suffered a fall during which she sprained both knees and was unable to walk back to her vehicle, according to the department.
Rescue personnel treated the woman for her injuries before placing her on a spineboard and onto a rescue litter for extrication.
“Due to the dangerous and rocky conditions of the mountainous terrain extra resources were required,” the department said.
Once at her vehicle, the woman was able to leave the scene on her own.
All units were back in quarters by 6:31 p.m., the department said.
