Betty Jane “BJ” Pa, 83, of Hilo, died Dec. 9, 2020, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, she was a retired sales associate with Hilo Hatties and Muu Muu Tree.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Jan. 5 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel for a 10 a.m. service. Burial to follow at 11:30 a.m. at Homelani Memorial Park, Lehua Section. Family requests casual attire.

She is survived by husband, Samuel Pa Jr.; sons, Jason Pa of Honolulu and Leland (Jewel) Pa of Hilo; daughter, Suzette (Darryl) Anguay of Honolulu; hanai daughter Gina King of Hilo; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Steven Medeiros

Steven “Steve” Medeiros, 64, of Hilo, died Dec. 8, 2020, at Hilo Medical Center. Born on Feb. 19, 1956, in Kohala, he was a retired heavy equipment operator/mechanic, and a member of New Hope Christian Fellowship, Hilo, and the Rock &Roll Motorcycle Club.

Services will be held at a later date.

He is survived by wife, Lizel Medeiros of Hilo; daughters, Amanda (Mark) Ka’ae of Oahu, Wanda Medeiros of Kawaihae and Anela Libron of Hilo; son, Steven Medeiros-Libron of Hilo; brothers, Robert (Gerdha) Medeiros, John (Cindi) Medeiros and Jefferey (Desiree) Medeiros, all of Kohala; sister, Alicia (Benny) Ramos of Kohala; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Doris Sugihara

Doris A. Sugihara, 97, of Hilo, died Dec. 9, 2020 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Kealakekua, she was retired from the Hawaii Police Department and was a member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and Hawaii Shima Fukuoka Kenjinkai.

George Calicdan

George Calicdan, 75, of Hilo, died Dec. 22, 2020, at his residence. Born July 4, 1945, in Waimanalo, Oahu, he was a retired cable splicer for Verizon, youth baseball and basketball coach of Carvalho Park, nember of the “MindBenders” Softball Team, Ali’s Motorcycle Club and a U.S. Navy veteran.

Friends may call at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 7 Dodo Mortuary Chapel for a 10:30 a.m. service. Burial to follow at East Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2.

He is survived by wife, Susan Calicdan of Hilo; sons, Christopher (Kristie) Calicdan and Corey (Chelsi) Calicdan of Hilo; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Jane (Jim) Peleiholani of Hilo and Lilian Soares of Honolulu; brothers, Segundo Calicdan Jr. of Hilo and John (Patricia) Calicdan of Reno, Nevada; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Lorraine Kaono

Lorraine Margaret Kaono, 81, of Waimea, died Aug. 23, 2020, at her residence. Born in North Kohala, she was owner of Lorraine’s Snack Mobile.

Walter McGuire

Walter Manfred McGuire, 60, of Hilo, died Dec. 23, 2020, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Marktredwitz, Germany, he was a retired construction worker, and former youth basketball coach, and an Army veteran.

Patricia Chong

Patricia “Aunty Patty” Nohea Chong, 69, of Kailua-Kona, died Dec. 16, 2020, at her residence. Born Dec. 27, 1950, in Puuanahulu, she was a cook at the former Teru’s Restaurant and Bar, former Queen K Tesoro and Sam Choy’s Restaurant.

She is survived by sons, Benson (Tisha) Chong and Duane Chong; brother, Albert Mitchell; sisters, Doreen (Lawrence) Mills, Juliette (Alan) Lucena, and Vivian (Matthew) Kaili, all of Kailua-Kona; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ivan Ah Sam

Ivan Gene “Johnny” Ah Sam, 68, of Kohala, died Nov. 14, 2020, at his residence. Born Aug. 23, 1952, in Kohala, he was a retired marine machinery mechanic at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, a U.S. Army Reserve veteran of the 100th Battalion 442nd Infantry, and youth coach and umpire.

Betty Taeko Ichimura died Dec. 20, 2020, in Hilo. Born in Honolulu, she worked for the State of Hawaii and the University of Hawaii and was also a homemaker, member and certified teacher with Miyazono Minyo Buyo Kai, former brownie troop leader, Cub Scout den mother and community volunteer.

Robert Goodwin

Robert Douglas Goodwin, 67, of Kailua-Kona, died July 26, 2018. Born March 19, 1951, in New York, he was a retired U.S. Postal Service carrier and also served as a volunteer fireman in North Merrick, New York.

He is survived by wife, Pauline Goodwin of Kailua-Kona; daughter, Lara-Lynn Goodwin of Kailua-Kona; brother, Kenneth (Christine) Goodwin of New Jersey; sisters, Carol Straubing of Blue Ash, Ohio, Patricia (Rick) Snedecor of Patchogue, New York, Barbara Schaefer of Mundelein, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

Juleen Agpalza

Juleen Rene Agpalza, 65, of Pahoa, died Dec. 26, 2020 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Oct. 21, 1955, in California, she worked was a paralegal and was a member of the Overcoming Faith Center in Hilo.

Carmen Sanchez

Carmen Salazar Sanchez, 74, of Honokaa, died Dec. 9, 2020, at Hawaii Care Choices in Hilo. Born May 23, 1946, in Honokaa, she was a retired group reservations coordinator for the Hilton in Waikoloa and a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa, Big Island Visayan Club and a Beauty Consultant for Barbizon School of Modeling.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Jan. 9, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa for a 10 a.m. Mass.

She is survived by daughter, Rochelle (Kent) Kagawa of Hilo; sons, Michael (Renee) Sanchez of Waikoloa and Brian (Laua’e) Sanchez of Waimea; sisters, Sue (Fino) Agor and Crescentia Salazar Ganutan of Oahu, Caroline Vinluan of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ikuko Solis

Ikuko Solis, 88, of Pahoa, died Dec. 15, 2020, at Hilo Medical Center. Born April 19, 1932, in Saitama, Japan, she was a homemaker and was educated in botany.

Mary Branco

Mary Angelo Branco, 90 of Honokaa, died Dec. 19, 2020, at Hale Ho’ola Hamakua. Born Sept. 26, 1930, in Haina, Maui, she was a retired candy maker and packer for the Hawaiian Holiday Macadamia Nut Co. in Honokaa and a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Society in Honokaa.
