Hawaii Island police arrested 26 motorists for suspected drunken driving Jan. 4 and Sunday. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash.

Kona officers arrested 14 drivers while South Hilo officers arrested six and Puna officers four, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in Ka‘u and South Kohala arrested one driver in each district.

So far this year, there have been 45 DUI arrests compared with 22 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 16 major accidents so far this year compared with 36 during the same period last year.

One fatality has been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2019, one person had perished.
