Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for suspected drunken driving Jan. 11 and Sunday. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash.

Kona officers arrested 13 drivers while South Hilo officers arrested three and Puna officers twp, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in Ka‘u and South Kohala arrested one driver in each district.

So far this year, there have been 65 DUI arrests compared with 48 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 30 major accidents so far this year compared with 57 during the same period last year.

Two fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2019, one person had died.
