Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for suspected drunken driving Jan. 18 and Sunday. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash and one was younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested 12 drivers while South Hilo officers arrested three and Puna officers two, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in Hamakua, North Hilo and South Kohala arrested one driver in each district.

So far this year, there have been 85 DUI arrests compared with 76 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 42 major accidents so far this year compared with 73 during the same period last year.

Two fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, three people had died.
