Big Island police have identified the operator of the motorcycle involved in Sunday’s crash at the intersection of Highway 19 and Honomu Road as 67-year-old Timothy N. Shepherd of Waimea.

Shepherd was traveling south on Highway 19 on his motorcycle when he was struck by a northbound vehicle executing a left turn from Highway 19 onto Honomu Road, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the incident, which is classified as second-degree negligent homicide. Police investigating the traffic collision have determined that inattention to driving and failure to yield are major contributors to the crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has information regarding it should contact the East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit at (808) 961-2339. Those who prefer anonymity should call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.
