A winter weather advisory has been posted for the Big Island’s Mauna Loa and Maunakea summits, as well as the Haleakala summit on Maui, through 6 p.m. Tuesday.

National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu said Monday afternoon that a fast-moving cold front will bring moisture to all three summits overnight into Tuesday. A low aloft will drop temperatures to near-freezing over Haleakala, and well below-freezing over Maunakea and Mauna Loa resulting in freezing rain and snow.

Snow accumulations of up to 3 inches are forecast for the Big Island summits, and up to 1 inch is forecast for Haleakala, forecasters said. Wind could gust as high as 35 mph.

Forecasters cautioned of icy roadways, making for very dangerous driving at the summits, which could prompt road closures. The Maunakea Access Road was open as of Monday evening.
