The Kealakehe Intermediate School Art Department and the Kiwanis Club of Kailua Kona, led by Patrick Wong, recently teamed up to sponsor an art competition for KIS students.

The theme of the contest, “Kiwanis means Aloha,” involved students in grades seven and eight. Under the tutelage of art teacher Starr Anastasio, over 60 students submitted an entry, with 25 turned over to Kiwanis Club members who acted as judges for the contest.

Since each of the entries reflected considerable skill and creativity, the judges were faced with the very challenging task of narrowing down the list to the top five. Judges Kathy Huckaby, Carol Greenwell, Linda Takai and Guy Parillo carefully evaluated the artwork and selected the top five students with first place going to Nicole Yang, second place to Sophia Alwine, third place to Kathy Garcia Avedano, fourth place to Dominic Marzan and firth place to Hi’ilei Bunghanoy-Aiu

The talented students were awarded cash prizes donated by Kiwanis Club members. Moreover, all participants were given gift certificates also donated by Kiwanians. The contest-winning artwork is currently on display in the KIS main office.
