Police arrest 26 for suspected drunken driving

Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for suspected drunken driving Feb. 8 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than age 21.

South Hilo officers arrested eight drivers while Puna officers arrested six and Kona officers five, according to data released Wednesday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Kohala and Hamakua officers nabbed three drivers in each district and North Kohala officers arrested one.

So far this year, there have been 166 DUI arrests compared with 141 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 87 major accidents so far this year compared with 125 during the same period last year.

Five fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, five people had also died.
