Charles “Charlie” Yasuo Tamashiro, 83, of Hilo and formerly of Oahu died Mar. 3 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired senior manager for the former Beneficial Finance Company, employed at Kobayashi Travel, member of the Puna Hongwanji Mission, Alokele Kumiai, Waiakea Pirates Organization, and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Friends may call 9-10 a.m. March 3 at Puna Hongwanji Mission; private memorial service to follow. Casual attire. Social distancing and wearing of facemasks to be observed.
Survived by wife, Jean Tamashiro of Hilo; daughters, Jennifer (Bruce) Yoshikawa of Pullman, WA, Janelle (Robert) Fendler of Alturas, CA; brother, Takeo Tamashiro of Hilo; son Randy Barnigan of Honolulu; sisters, Shirley Yahata of Torrance, CA, Joan Akamine of Gardena, CA, Ruthie (Ken) Sakamoto of Torrance, CA; seven grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Donnell Akana Sr.
Donnell D. Akana Sr., 68 of Waiohinu, died on Jan. 28, 2021 at home. Born in Pahala, Hawaii.

Allen Gaspar Jr.
Allen “Kimokeo” Kimokeopalau Gaspar Jr., 63, of Kailua-Kona, died Feb. 6, 2021, at Kona Community Hospital. Born March 5, 1957 in Kealakekua, he was a carpenter, fine wood artist, coconut and lauhala weaver, volunteer for numerous Hawaiian cultural restoration projects and a waterman.
A drive-by celebration of life will be held 9-11 a.m. March 6, mauka side of Lyman’s beach. A paddle out from Banyan’s immediately to follow. Loose flowers welcome. Masks and social distancing required.
He is survived by wife, Ramona Gaspar of Kailua-Kona; Celeste (Brandy Clark) Gaspar of Washington; son, Landon (Jadelyn) Gaspar of Kailua-Kona; siblings, Michael Gaspar of Kainaliu, Gordon Gaspar of Kailua, Oahu, Gloria Santiago of Puna, Darrell Rodrigues of Hilo, Debralynn Villiarimo of Maui, Veronica Gaspar of Kaneohe, Michael A. In Bea Kim, 60, of Kailua-Kona, died Feb. 20 at Queen’s Hospital in Honolulu. Born Feb. 15, 1961 in Seoul, Korea, he was a chef and manger for various restaurants and co-owner of the former Kim’s Place, Kona Mix Plate and Uncle In Bea’s Steakhouse.

Laverne Mahealani Lindsey Kanakanui, 72, of Hilo, died Feb. 12, 2021, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, she was a retired purchasing manager at the NAPA Distribution Center in Waipahu, member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Red Hat Society, Halau O Ka Ua Kanilehua and a hula instructor.
Friends may call 9-10 a.m. March 7 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel; a celebration of her life will begin at 10 a.m. Additional services and inurnment on Oahu will take place at a later date. Casual attire. Social distancing and wearing of facemasks to be observed.

Lilinoe Eloise Hapai Haili, 90, of Keaau, died Feb. 21, 2021 at home. Born July 31, 1930, in Honolulu, she was a retired cashier for the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki and member of the Mountain View Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She is survived by children, Charmaine Okeson, Matthew Haili, Ginger (Stephen) Melnick, Crystal Haili, Lovie Perry, Elilee Haili; 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
