Police arrest two dozen for suspected DUI

Big Island police arrested two dozen motorists for suspected drunken driving March 15 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested eight drivers while South Kohala officers arrested seven and South Hilo officers five, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Puna officers arrested three drivers and North Kohala officers arrested one.

So far this year, there have been 283 DUI arrests compared with 256 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 166 major accidents so far this year compared with 224 during the same period last year.

As of Sunday, six fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, seven people had died.
