Big Island police have opened an attempted murder investigation following an apparent shooting early Saturday in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates in Ka‘u.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., Ka‘u patrol officers responded to a residence in the 92-1700 block of Keaka Parkway to a report of a man with a head injury, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Upon arrival, officers found a 39-year-old Ocean View man outside the residence with a severe head injury. The man was responsive and informed officers he could not recall how he sustained the head injury.

The victim was taken by Hawaii Fire Department personnel to Kona Community Hospital for treatment where it was determined that he sustained a gunshot wound to his head. He was later flown to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu where he underwent surgery for his injury. As of Sunday, he remained hospitalized in critical condition.

Detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section responded to the scene and are continuing the investigation.
