Ka’u artist featured at Wailoa Center
Ka’u artist Edwin Kayton is one of several Big Island artists featured in the current “Mana” exhibit at Wailoa Center in Hilo.
The show, sponsored by Na Makua of Hilo, is open 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday through April 29.
In addition to seven oil paintings which focus on both figurative and island landscapes, Kayton’s recently completed marble sculpture “Call of the Pu” is on display. He shipped this large piece of Carrara marble from Pietrasanta, Italy, following his participation in a marble-sculpting class in 1994.
The artist is well-known for his realistic Hawaiian portrayals that most often incorporate images of current residents from Hawaii Island, Maui and Oahu as well as the voyaging canoes Makali‘i, Hokule‘a and Hawaii Loa.

Wailoa Center’s ‘10x10x10’ exhibit opens May 7
Following a one-year delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wailoa Center announces the 10x10x10 Installation Art Exhibit will be on display May 7 through 27.
An open house is slated from 1 to 6 p.m. May 7 with the artists being in the gallery. This event is free and open to the public. Mandatory mask requirements and COVID protocols will be observed.
10x10x10 is a unique exhibit focused on an installation art challenge. Ten artists were chosen, and they agreed to participate using only a predetermined list of nine common materials (cement, driftwood, aluminum foil, plywood, spray paint, window screen, joint compound, brown paper bags, and any kind of connectors (glue, screws, nails, Velcro etc.) plus one material of their choosing. They were given one year, but due to COVID, it turned into two years to complete their installation project.
These artists include the team of Wendy Barske and Glorianne Garza, Leigh Critchlow, Kimberly Langston Hagan, Jeffery Kurash, Ethel Mann, Matt Politano, Bill Swartz, Peter Underwood, Jeff Walker and Echo Yarberry.
Each artist or team will complete their installation in one of the 10 assigned spaces in Wailoa’s upstairs Main Gallery.
The 10x10x10 alumni groups from 2016, 2018 and 2019 will be occupying the Fountain Gallery and Education Lanai area with smaller installation versions using the same materials as the Main Gallery artists. Some of those artists are Liz Ambrose, Shelley Hanaoka, Lahela Camara, Emily Leucht, Karrieanne Warren, Patrick Warren, Shelby Smith, Kim Rolon, Charlene Asato, Susan Champany, Jay West and Codie King.
Wailoa Center is a division of State Parks, Department of Land and Natural Resources. It is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Aloha Theatre holding auditions for ‘The Two Musketeers’
Aloha Theatre is holding auditions for its first live performance since the start of the pandemic. Performances will be socially distanced and with limited seating
Auditions for “The Two Musketeers” will take place in person at the Aloha Theatre from 6 to 9 p.m. today and Saturday. They will consist of cold readings from the script and movement work.
Auditions are by appointment, which can be set up by filling out an audition form at https://apachawaii.org/auditions. Actors are asked to arrive 10 minutes early; those who arrive late forfeit their time slot.
Directed by Courtney Booth, the classic tale of d’Artagnan and his sword-fighting friends is presented by a hilariously self-aware cast of six, with romance, wit, and derring-do to spare. This low-tech, high-comedy adaptation is a witty send-up of Alexandre Dumas’ beloved adventure. All characters, except for D’Artagnan, play multiple characters.
Next weekend, Aloha Theatre will hold auditions for “Unstaged: Theatre Inside Out,” which will feature some of our favorite scenes from shows you may already know and love. Each scene features a different local director. Scenes will be filmed in June, and the entire series of vignettes will be available to view from home in July.
More than 20 roles and a variety of short scenes will be cast. Auditions will be held in person from 6 to 9 p.m. April 23 and 24. More details, including how to sign up for a slot, will be posted at www.apachawaii.org.
