Solid Waste Transfer Stations to be closed Wednesday
All Hawaii County Department of Environmental Management Solid Waste Transfer Stations will be closed Wednesday for the division’s quarterly safety employee training.
The Reload Facility, located at the South Hilo Sanitary Landfill and the West Hawaii Sanitary Landfill, located in Waikoloa, will continue to accept municipal solid waste during regular business hours from 7 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. daily.
The West Hawaii Organics Facility, East Hawaii Organics Facility, Hilo Reuse Center and the HI-5 Redemption Center at the Hilo Transfer Station will be open during normal business hours.
HEPA offers scholarships to Kona, North Kohala students
The Hawaii Emergency Physicians Associated, Inc. (HEPA), which recently began staffing the emergency rooms at Kona Community Hospital and Kohala Hospital, is offering two $3,000 college scholarships to students, with one going to a pupil in the Kona area and the other in the North Kohala area.
The scholarships will be awarded $1,500 per semester per student. The goal of the scholarship is to support a graduating high school student, who without financial assistance, is not likely to attend college. The primary criteria for scholarship consideration are financial and familial hardship.
Scholarship application forms can be downloaded from the Kona Community Hospital website at KCH.hhsc.org. Applications can also be requested via email from Judy Donovan at jdonovan@hhsc.org. Completed application forms must be received by May 25.
‘Uncle Bo’ Campos scholarship available
Kai Opua Canoe Club recently announced it is accepting applications for the 2021 Lawrence “Uncle Bo” Campos Scholarship.
Uncle Bo loved getting everyone involved in outrigger canoe racing and always put Hawaii’s kids first. Perpetuating the sport of outrigger canoe paddling was the heart of this wonderfully dedicated man. He knew that by keeping kids on the water, they too would learn the culture and pass it along to the next generation. This scholarship carries his legacy forward.
The scholarship is open to Hawaii Island graduating seniors with a 3.0 GPA or higher, who have demonstrated academic achievement, and community participation, and has paddled at the club or high school level in the past three years. In addition to strong academics, the candidate’s merit of active volunteerism and leadership in the school, community, church, and/or employment will be considered.
Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded, with one going to a girl and the other to a boy. Funds are dispersed directly to the recipients to be used to support studies at a trade school, community college, or college/university program.
The deadline for receipt of scholarship packets is May 28.

PTA announces training, convoys
Training for the remainder of April and through May, involves the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps, with more than 1,500 troops on the ground at Pohakuloa Training Area.
Training will involve rotary wing aircraft (helicopters), MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, small arms, artillery, mortars and unmanned aerial systems or drones.
The following convoys are planned:
• 8 a.m., 10 and noon today from PTA to Kawaihae
• 8 a.m., 10 and noon Wednesday from PTA to Kawaihae
• 8 a.m. Thursday from PTA to Kawaihae
• 8 and 10 a.m. Friday from PTA to Kawaihae
• 8 a.m. Saturday from PTA to Kawaihae
• 8 a.m. May 7 from PTA to Kawaihae
