Five new COVID-19 cases reported, three hospitalized on Big Island

Five new COVID-19 cases were reported Tuesday on the Big Island, bringing the total case count to 2,682.

Statewide, 54 new cases were reported on Tuesday by the Department of Health. Oahu reported 37 of those cases, Maui County eight and Kauai two. Two residents were diagnosed while outside the state.

Statewide, 32,041 people have tested positive for COVID-19 since the end of last February. The Big Island had a 0.8% test positivity rate on Tuesday, under the statewide rate of 1.4%.

Over the past two weeks, the Big Island has reported 93 cases, or an average of 5.3 cases per day. Twenty-nine of those cases were reported in Kailua-Kona and 33 in Hilo. Most other areas of the island are reporting less than 10 cases per day.

On Tuesday, 41 people were hospitalized across the state, including three on the Big Island. To date, 2,451 people have required hospitalization, including 129 on the Big Island.

One new coronavirus-related death was reported by the state on Tuesday. The Department of Health said the death was among a boy under age 10 who had underlying conditions.

The boy was visiting the state with his parents when he began to experience COVID-19 symptoms shortly after arriving on the islands. He was taken to a hospital where he later died, according to the department. Both of his parents were fully vaccinated before making the trip to Hawaii.

Of the 479 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported by the state to date, 372 were on Oahu, 49 were on Maui, 53 were on the Big Island and one on Kauai. Three deaths were among residents outside the state.
