Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for suspected drunken driving April 26 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and three were younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested eight drivers while South Hilo officers arrested six, according to data released Wednesday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Kohala and Puna officers arrested three motorists in each district and Ka‘u and North Kohala officers nabbed one in their respective districts.
So far this year, there have been 427 DUI arrests compared with 299 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 267 major accidents so far this year compared with 280 during the same period last year.
As of Wednesday morning, eight fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, eight people had also died.
