Big Island police arrested 32 motorists for suspected drunken driving May 3 and Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and three were younger than age 21.
South Hilo officers arrested 14 drivers while Kona officers arrested eight and South Kohala officers five, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department. North Kohala officers nabbed three drivers while Puna and Ka‘u officers arrested one in each district.
So far this year, there have been 460 DUI arrests compared with 315 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 282 major accidents so far this year compared with 291 during the same period last year.
As of Monday, eight fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, eight people had also died.
