Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for suspected drunken driving May 17 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

Kona officers arrested 13 drivers while South Hilo and Puna officers arrested four drivers in each district, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Kohala officers also arrested two drivers.

So far this year, there have been 500 DUI arrests compared with 340 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 311 major accidents so far this year compared with 320 during the same period last year.

As of Monday, 11 fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, eight people had died.
