Five new COVID-19 cases brings tally to 2,875

The Big Island reported five new COVID-19 Friday, bringing the total case count to 2,875.

Statewide, 58 new cases were reported by the Department of Health with 24 of those cases on Oahu, eight in Maui County and none on Kauai. Five cases were residents diagnosed out of state. Since the end of last February, 36,076 people have tested positive for COVID-19 across Hawaii.

Over the past two weeks, the Big Island has reported 62 cases, or an average of 5.3 cases per day. The Kailua-Kona and Hilo areas reported 19 and 15 cases, respectively.

The Big Island had a 1.1% positive rate, over the state’s 0.9% positivity rate on Friday.

Also Friday, a total of 44 patients with the virus were in Hawaii hospitals with three reported on the Big Island.

No new coronavirus-related deaths were reported on Friday. Of the 498 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported by the state to date, 386 were on Oahu, 54 were on Maui, 53 were on the Big Island and two on Kauai. Three deaths were among residents outside the state.

Also Friday, the state Department of Public Safety reported three additional positive COVID-19 test results among inmates at Hawaii Community Correctional Center bringing the current cluster of cases to 11. One inmate who tested positive has since been released from custody after serving their full term, leaving the number of inmates housed at the Hilo jail who have tested positive for COVID-19 at 10.
