Twenty-five new COVID-19 cases were reported on the Big Island Friday, bringing the island’s total case count at 2,996.
Statewide, 69 new cases were reported by the Department of Health with 27 of those cases on Oahu, 13 in Maui County and one on Kauai. Four case was a resident diagnosed out of state. Since the end of last February, 36,471 people have tested positive for COVID-19 across Hawaii.
The Big Island had a 3.8% positive rate, over the state’s 1.1% positivity rate on Friday.
Also Thursday, a total of 35 patients with the virus were in Hawaii hospitals with four reported on the Big Island.
No new coronavirus-related deaths were reported on Friday. Of the 501 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported by the state to date, 388 were on Oahu, 55 were on Maui, 53 were on the Big Island and two on Kauai. Three deaths were among residents outside the state.
Also Friday, the Department of Public Safety reported receiving results of two Hawaii Community Correctional Center inmates tested at the facility as part of mass COVID-19 testing spurred by an outbreak that began May 24. One was negative and the other inconclusive. The inconclusive test will be retested.
To date, 113 cases have cropped the facility with 100 of those among inmates. One inmate has since been released from custody after completing their sentence leaving the total number of housed at the facility as of Friday at 99. Thirteen of the cases were among staff.
Two positive cases were first reported at the Hilo jail on May 24 prompting the facility to implement its pandemic protocol status, which calls for a facility-wide quarantine of all inmate housing and suspending inmate movement going out of the facility.
Hawaii Community Correctional Center, as of its last population report issued May 31, housed 348 inmates, which exceeded operational capacity by 122 persons.
