Big Island police are investigating a possible drowning Tuesday morning in waters off South Kohala.

The victim was identified as 68-year-old Harry Wakefield, of Alabama, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Wakefield was apparently found unresponsive near the “Pentagon” mooring in Anaehoomalu Bay at the Waikoloa Beach Resort, according to the department, which sent officers to the scene at 10:14 a.m. Prior to police arrival, Hawaii Fire Department medics had been summoned, performed CPR and were transporting the man to North Hawaii Community Hospital.

Wakefield was pronounced dead at 11:22 a.m., according to police.

Police have initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
