Longtime University of San Diego baseball coach Rich Hill resigned Friday to become the head coach at Hawaii-Manoa.
Hill, who has more than 1,000 career victories, was 747-514-4 in 23 seasons guiding the Toreros. He is the winningest coach in West Coast Conference history with a 349-215-1 mark.
USD won seven WCC titles and made eight NCAA Tournament appearances under Hill, who was selected WCC Coach of the Year four times.
“It has been an honor and privilege to serve as the head baseball coach at USD,” Hill said in a statement. “The people here are what make it such a special place. Especially the players and coaches that I’ve had the fortune of locking arms with to achieve the common goal.”
The Toreros have had only two baseball coaches over the past 58 years. In 1999, Hill replaced John Cunningham as coach after stints at Cal Lutheran (his alma mater) and USF.
Bill McGillis, USD executive director of athletics, said a national search will be conducted for Hill’s replacement at USD.
