Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for suspected drunken driving July 5 and Sunday. None of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

South Hilo officers arrested eight drivers while Kona officers arrested five and Puna officers four, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Kohala and North Hilo officers arrested one driver in each district.

So far this year, there have been 620 DUI arrests compared with 458 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 407 major accidents so far this year compared with 419 during the same period last year.

As of Tuesday, 13 fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, 10 people had died.
