The U.S. Army reported Monday a brush fire that charred more than 2,000 acres on Maunakea’s western flank was more than 90% contained.
Despite the high level of containment, Old Saddle Road remained closed Monday as firefighters continued to douse flames in the more than 2,000-acre brush fire between the road and Daniel K. Inouye Highway in South Kohala, according to Civil Defense.
Firefighters from Pohakuloa Training Area, the Hawaii Fire Department, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade and state Department of Forestry and Wildlife have been working the fire since it broke out Saturday afternoon in the Keamuku Maneuver Area. Crews are still on the scene monitoring hot spots. Air crews remain on standby, if needed
The Army said firefighters were able to preserve the Girl Scout Camp at Kilohana, along with other critical habitat areas nearby.
