Police nab 15 for suspected drunken driving

Big Island police arrested 15 motorists for suspected drunken driving July 26 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

Kona officers arrested six drivers while Puna and South Kohala officers arrested three in each district, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Hilo offices nabbed two and North Kohala officers one.

So far this year, there have been 674 DUI arrests compared with 515 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 457 major accidents so far this year compared with 456 during the same period last year.

As of Tuesday morning, 13 fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, 12 people had died.
