Marie Arruda

Marie Teresa Arruda, 76, of Volcano, died June 19, 2021, at her residence. Born in Wicklow County, Ireland, she was an office manager for Arruda Properties, Ltd.

Friends may call at 2 p.m. Aug. 7 at Hawaiian Paradise Park Community Center on Makuu Drive for a service. Donations may also be made in her memory to Aloha Ilio Rescue, PO Box 492364, Keaau, HI 96749.

She is survived by husband, Tony Arruda of Volcano; daughter, Jeannie Marie (Steve) Ziff of San Diego; son, Ian (Danette) Arruda of Volcano; sisters, Bridget Clinton of Essex, England, Angela (Richard) Greene and Gertrude Manley of Ireland; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Rose Rios

Rose Marie Rios, 63, died July 19, 2021. She was retired from the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Services will be held at a later date.

She is survived by mother, Kathrine Villanueva-Rios; companion, Rose Dos Santos; sisters, Monique (Joseph) Fernandez, Kathleen (Ronald) Rios, Karla (Tim) Guzman Bush; brother, Danny Darren Rios; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Frank Locke

Frank Locke, 67, of Mountain View, died July 28, 2021, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Dec. 20, 1953, in Oregon, he was a retired carpenter.

Services will be held at noon Aug. 8 at Richardson’s Beach Park in Keaukaha.

He is survived by children, Naomi Locke, Heather Locke, and Cameron Locke; and three grandchildren.

Catherine Matsuda

Catherine Matsuda, 85, of Hilo, died July 24, 2021, at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born March 9, 1936, in Hakalau, she was retired from the former KK Place, had also worked at the former KK Tei, Roy’s Gourmet and various other restaurants and was a member of the Kilauea Hawaii Pidgin Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Aug. 12 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a public visitation. Private funeral service and burial follows. Zoom service to be held at a later date. The family requests casual attire. Condolences may be sent to Colleen, PO Box 11300, Hilo, HI, 96721.

She is survived by sons, Ricky Matsuda and Arnold (Ernella) Matsuda of Hilo, and Matthew Matsuda of Honolulu; daughter, Colleen Matsuda of Hilo; sister, Julia (Johnny) Pacheco of Wainaku; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Thomas Orton

Thomas Michael Orton, 70, of Kailua-Kona, died July 14, 2021, at his residence. Born Oct. 10, 1950, in Los Angeles, he was a retired engineer for Kona Community Hospital, served as a union steward for the United Public Workers and a volunteer firefighter for Kona Village Resort.

Services held. In lieu of flowers, plant a tree in his honor.

He is survived by wife, Cindy Orton of Kailua-Kona; son, Steven (Caitlynne) Orton of Oregon; daughter, Cathryn (Kirill) Vekhov of Kailua-Kona; brother, JC Orton; sister, Victoria Orton both of California; granddaughter, Kamila Vekhov of Kailua Kona; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joseph Shields Jr.

Joseph D. Shields Jr., 80, of Keaau, died July 21, 2021, at his residence. Born in 1941 in Philadelphia, he was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and a retired supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service in Lake Mary, Florida.

Friends may call at noon Aug. 9 at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 for a graveside service.

He is survived by spouse, Joanne Shields; daughters, Sayoko Yamaguchi, Elizabeth (Thomas) Wuscher, Helen Dietrich, Joanne Shields, and Victoria Shields; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
