Marrow donor drives in Kona and Hilo

Bone marrow donor drives will be held Aug. 28 and 29 on the Big Island.

The drives are being hosted by Life Scout Riley Regan of Oahu’s Troop 325 as part of his Eagle Scout project. The first is slated Aug. 28 at KTA Super Stores at the Keauhou Shopping and the second Aug. 29 at KTA Super Stores Puainako in Hilo. Both will be run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There is a need for more diverse individuals to join donor registry with Be The Match Hawaii and increase the chances of finding a donor match for patients awaiting a life-saving blood stem cell or marrow transplant.

Assisting Regan with the project is Big Island Rep. Richard Onishi.

“We hope that the donor registry drives on the Big Island will help generate hundreds of people to be added to the registry so that more lives can be saved, as well as to raise awareness about how easy it is for anyone to save a life,” said Onishi.

Volunteers will be onsite providing awareness about the mission of Be The Match Hawaii and assisting those interested in joining the donor registry with the registration process, which typically takes no more than 10 minutes.

Potential donors must be between the ages of 18 to 44 years old, meet health guidelines and be willing to donate to anyone in need of a bone marrow or blood stem-cell transplant. The online registration process includes a short form to complete along with a cheek swab sample.

If you cannot attend these donor drives in person, you can register online anytime at no cost at my.bethematch.org/ImuaScouts or text ImuaScouts to 61474.

Hawaiian Electric to conduct aerial line inspections

The islandwide inspections are scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. However, exact times and routes will depend on weather conditions. Inspections will be conducted in a Manuiwa Airways helicopter and require the aircraft to fly low and slow which may cause some noise disturbances.
