NAMI Hawaii offers free programs and services

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Hawaii presents free programs and services supported by the annual NAMIWalks fundraiser to be held this year on Oct. 9.

NAMI signature programs and support groups offer education and real-life recovery for individuals affected by mental illness as well as for the family and friends of those with a mental health condition. These programs have been prepared by the national NAMI organization and are delivered by trained leaders with lived experience who know firsthand the struggles of living with a mental illness. It is hoped that as more people learn about mental illness, the less likely prejudice and stigma will exist in our community.

NAMI Peer-to-Peer is an educational program for adults living with mental health conditions who are looking to better understand themselves and their process of recovery. Classes include activities, discussions and informative videos to help participants set visions and goals, learn about options for mental health treatment and care, practice self-care, enhance communication skills, and more. Peer-to-Peer will be held via Zoom on eight consecutive Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon starting Sept. 11 and ending Oct. 30. To sign up, email: info@namihawaii.org with your name, contact info, and a brief summary about your mental health journey.

NAMI’s Family and Friends is a two-day seminar for those who have loved ones living with a mental health condition and is open to anyone interested in becoming better informed about mental health issues. It will be held on Sept. 18 (Part 1) and Sept. 25 (Part 2) from 10 a.m. to noon via Zoom. Participants will learn about treatment, communication, crisis strategies, and how to find help through community resources. Space is limited to 20 participants who are 18 years and older and advance registration is required.

NAMI Connection Recovery Support Groups are peer-led support groups open to any adult who lives with a mental health condition. NAMI Family Support Groups are for adult caregivers and family members of a loved one experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. Find strength in sharing experiences and gain insight from hearing the challenges and successes of others in a safe, confidential, caring environment. Support groups are free and held monthly via Zoom. Visit namihawaii.org for support groups statewide and their contact information.
