Hawaii County surpasses 6,000 COVID-19 cases

The Big Island Thursday added 163 new cases of COVID-19, pushing the island’s total case count over 6,000.

With the new cases, the Big Island’s tally reached 6,003. The state added 752 cases pushing the tally since February 2020 to 53,598. Hawaii County and the state Thursday shared a 7.6% positivity rate.

According to the DOH, 8,662 new cases have been reported in Hawaii in the past 14 days, including 1,504 on the Big Island. There has been an average of 713.3 new cases the past seven days statewide with the Big Island averaging 118.3 cases per day.

On the Big Island, Kailua-Kona and Hilo reported the most cases over the past two weeks with 385 and 407 cases, respectively. Meanwhile, 82 cases have cropped up in the Waikoloa area and 89 in the Waimea area of South Kohala. In Puna, Pahoa reported 60 cases and Keaau 119.

The state Thursday reported four new coronavirus-related deaths, three on Oahu and one on Kauai. Of the 558 deaths confirmed and reported by the state to date, 431 were on Oahu, 62 were on Maui, 59 were on the Big Island and three on Kauai. Three deaths were among residents outside the state.

Testing will be conducted today noon to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium on Manono Street in Hilo. Testing provided by KTA Super Stores.

Per Hawaii County, testing will also be conducted this week at the following times and sites:

• 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Hilo Lanes on Kinoole Street in Hilo. Testing provided by Premier Medical Group.

• 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Kona International Market on Luhia Street in Kailua-Kona. Testing provided by Premier Medical Group.

• Noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Waimea District Park on Ala Ohia Road in Waimea. Testing provided by KTA Super Stores.

• Noon to 4 p.m. Monday at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium on Manono Street in Hilo. Testing provided by KTA Super Stores.

• Noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Kona Community Aquatic Center on Kuakini Highway in Kailua-Kona. Testing provided by KTA Super Stores.

• 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Volcano Cooper Center on Wright Road in Volcano. Testing provided by Premier Medical Group.

• 1:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Volcano Cooper Center on Wright Road in Volcano. Testing provided by Premier Medical Group.

• Noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Aupuni Center on Pauahi Street in Hilo. Testing provided by Premier Medical Group.

• 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Ka Umeke Kaeo PCS School on Desha Avenue in Hilo. Testing provided by Premier Medical Group.

• Noon to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium on Manono Street in Hilo. Testing provided by KTA Super Stores.

Note: There is no testing currently scheduled by the county on Sunday, Aug. 22.
