COVID tally climbs by 158 to 6,449

State health officials reported 158 new cases of COVID-19 on the Big Island, 17.6% of the 893 cases reported statewide.

With the new cases, the Big Island’s tally reached 6,449 and state 56,009. Hawaii County had a 8% positivity rate, just under the statewide 8.1% positivity rate.

According to the DOH, 9,244 new cases have been reported in Hawaii in the past 14 days, including 1,610 on the Big Island. There has been an average of 674 new cases the past seven days statewide with the Big Island averaging 121 cases per day.

On Sunday, 39 people with COVID-19 remained hospitalized on the Big Island, unchanged from Saturday. Two of the island’s 24 ICU beds were available with 11 of the beds occupied by COVID-positive patients. Eight of those 11 patients are on ventilators.

One new coronavirus-related death was reported Sunday. No additional information was provided.

Of the 564 deaths confirmed and reported by the state to date, 433 were on Oahu, 64 were on Maui, 59 were on the Big Island and three on Kauai. Three deaths were among residents outside the state. The death reported Sunday had not yet not been assigned to an island, according to the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency’s data dashboard.
