106 new coronavirus cases reported Saturday on Big Island

The Department of Health reported 106 new cases on Hawaii Island Saturday, bringing the island’s cumulative total to 8,788.

Hawaii health officials reported 836 new cases of COVID-19 and 12 coronavirus-related deaths across the state including three on the Big Island. The three Hawaii Island fatalities include a man in his 30s, a man in his 50s and a woman in her 70s. All were hospitalized at the time of their death.

Of the new cases reported 606 were on Oahu, 85 in Maui County and 32 on Kauai. Seven cases were from residents diagnosed out of state. With the new cases, the state’s tally reached 71,156.

According to the DOH, 10,218 new cases have been reported in Hawaii in the past 14 days, including 1,522 on the Big Island. There has been an average of 605.1 new cases the past seven days statewide with the Big Island averaging 91.4 cases per day.

Hawaii County Saturday had a seven-day test positivity rate of 7.3%, over the state’s rate of 7%.

On Saturday, 51 people with COVID-19 remained hospitalized on the Big Island. Thirty-one patients occupied ICU beds with seven overflowing the island’s 24 ICU beds. Eight of the beds were occupied by COVID-positive patients. Six of those eight COVID patients are on ventilators.

Of the 653 deaths confirmed and reported by the state to date, 500 were on Oahu, 79 were in Maui County, 65 were on the Big Island and four on Kauai. Four deaths were among residents outside the state.
