Big Island police arrested 13 motorists for suspected drunken driving Sept. 13 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

Puna officers arrested four drivers while South Kohala and Kona officers arrested three drivers in each distrcit, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Hilo officers arrested two motorists and Hamakua officers one.

So far this year, there have been 770 DUI arrests compared with 680 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 565 major accidents so far this year compared with 548 during the same period last year.

As of Tuesday, 16 fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, 13 people had died.
