Islandwide Juried Art Show at Firehouse Gallery

The public is invited to attend the Waimea Arts Council’s 37th annual Founders Juried Art Show at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea.

The show runs through Nov. 28 and features local artist’s works selected by this year’s judges, Johanna Wiseman and Shirley Spencer, local artists and the proprietors of Akamai Art Supply in Kona.

They selected 49 pieces from the 64 that were entered for the exhibition.

They awarded cash prizes for: first place, Terry Bensch, “Irruptions and Interruptions;” second place, Laurel Oglesby, “The Auku’u;” third place: Barbara Schaefer, “Sea Dreams;” and three honorable mention awards: Han Choi, “Eastside Morning Seascape;” Laurel Oglesby, “The Jacaranda;” Chris Kutler, “Kohala (After Monet).”

The judges also gave seven Jurors Choice awards of gift certificates to Akamai Art Supply to the following artists: Parker Mason, Irina V. Place, Barbarich (Peter) Piergiorgio, Ilmar Reinvald. Kathy Sprinkle, Lorie Taylor, and J. Jay West.

Many of the artists selected for this show will be at the gallery to meet and greet visitors. The gallery, located at the intersection of Mamalahoa Highway and Lindsey Road in Waimea, is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Artists donate a percentage of all sales to support the Waimea Arts Council’s community projects.

The Waimea Arts Council is a nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization. It is the island’s oldest arts group for supporters of the arts, and the Firehouse Gallery is its most successful program.
