Big Island police Monday identified the 63-year-old Waikoloa man killed in a single-vehicle crash Sunday morning at the intersection of Daniel K. Inouye and Mamalahoa highways in South Kohala.
The victim was identified as Oren Mark Wilson, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Responding to a 10:25 a.m. Sunday call, police determined that an orange 2014 Honda CB1100 motorcycle was heading west (makai) on Daniel K. Inouye Highway when it ran off the roadway after striking a stop sign, according to police. The motorcycle then struck a guardrail and the rider was ejected.
Wilson, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was transported to Kona Community Hospital, police said. He was pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m.
Police believe that speed was a possible factor in the incident.
The crash closed the intersection for several hours while police investigated and crews cleaned the scene. It reopened shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday.

This is the 20th traffic fatality this year compared to 13 at this time last year.
