Police nab 14 for suspected drunken driving

Hawaii Island police arrested 14 motorists for suspected drunken driving Oct. 11 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than age 21.

South Hilo and Puna officers arrested four drivers in each district while Kona and South Kohala officers arrested three in each district, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department.

So far this year, there have been 840 DUI arrests compared with 770 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 639 major accidents so far this year compared with 612 during the same period last year.

As of Sunday, 20 fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By that time in 2020, 13 people had died.
