Police arrest 33 for suspected drunken driving

Hawaii Island police arrested 33 motorists for suspected drunken driving Oct. 25 and Sunday. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested one dozens drivers and South Hilo officers eight, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, officers in South Kohala and Puna arrested six drivers in each district and North Kohala officers nabbed one.

So far this year, there have been 897 DUI arrests compared with 819 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 666 major accidents so far this year compared with 647 during the same period last year.

As of Sunday, 22 fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By that time in 2020, 13 people had died.
