Police arrest 27 for suspected drunken driving

Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for suspected drunken driving Nov. 1 and Sunday. Twelve of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

Kona officers arrested 14 drivers and South Hilo officers arrested six and Puna officers five, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, officers in South Kohala arrested two drivers.

So far this year, there have been 924 DUI arrests compared with 834 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 681 major accidents so far this year compared with 659 during the same period last year.

As of Sunday, 22 fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By that time in 2020, 13 people had died.
