Hideo Kami

Hideo Kami, 102, of Hilo, died Oct. 19, 2021, at Ho’oNani Care Home in Waimea. Born in Kaiwiki, he was a retired maintenance man for the State of Hawaii Public Housing Authority Lanakila Housing, U.S. Army World War II veteran, 100th Infantry Battalion Company D, member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, Club 100 Hawaii Chapter and Nohea Kumiai.

Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

He is survived by son, Norris (Alicia) Kami of Kohala; daughter, Karen (Scott) Read of Portland, Oregon; brother, Ralph Kami of Hilo; granddaughter, Antonia Read; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Matilda Rivera

Matilda Rivera, 91, of Pahoa, died Oct. 15, 2021, at her residence. Born Feb. 21, 1930, in Olaa, she was a homemaker, caregiver, and member of Glad Tidings Church in Hilo and the former Kohala Puerto Rican Social Club.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Nov. 18 at Dodo Mortuary for a 10 a.m. service; burial to follow at Alae Cemetery. Casual attire.

She is survived by sons, Clyde Albez and Peter Albez, both of Pahoa; daughters, Rachel Ullerick, Helen Roer and Marsha (Chan) Pak, all of Pahoa, and Audrey (Michael) LaRue of Texas; brother, Manuel Martines of Pahoa; sister, Jackie McKenzie of Honolulu; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Michelle Whitney

Michelle Kuuipo Whitney, 60, of Hilo, died Oct. 13, 2021 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Jan. 12, 1961, in Hilo, she was a kitchen helper for the former Hilo Lanes Diner.

Friends may callat 10 a.m. Nov. 21 for a graveside committal service at Alae Cemetery.

She is survived by sisters, Rachelle Whitney and Stephanie Atiz; brother, Solomon Whitney; and son, Brandon Whitney.
