The future USS Daniel Inouye, or DDG 118, cruised off the coast of East Hawaii on Tuesday morning as it headed toward Oahu.
The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer — named in honor of the late U.S. senatorfrom Hawaii and World War II
Medal of Honor recipient — left General Dynamics Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine, on Oct. 4. enroute to its home port, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Oahu.
The ship is scheduled to arrive there this morning and to be officially commissionedon Dec. 8, one day after the 80th Anniversary Pearl Harbor Remembrance Commemoration.
“Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are multi-mission ships able to hold targets on land, at sea, in the air, and under water at risk with a suite of sophisticated weapons and sensors,” according to a statement from U.S. Navy.
After it is commissioned, the USS Daniel Inouye will report to the commander of Destroyer Squadron 31.
