A 38-year-old Kona man is recovering after an apparent shark attack Saturday in waters off Banyans Surf Spot in Kailua-Kona.

Responding to the 6:03 p.m. alarm, Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel arrived at the popular surf spot off Alii Drive to find a man who had suffered a shark bite to him arm.

“Upon arrival, the victim was out of the water with a tourniquet already applied. He was conscious and ambulatory at the scene. Medic personnel treated him and transported to Kona ER,” fire officials said.

The man was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he underwent surgery. The man, who declined further interviews, told media outlets that he believed the shark was a great white. He was recuperating on Wednesday.
